THE BANGLADESH TRAGEDY: Stability of a Dictator or Anarchy of a Nobel Laureate? Who is the Real Culprit?

From an Asian Tiger to a Begging Bowl A Tale of Two Bangladesh

On August 5 2024 celebrations erupted on the streets of Dhaka. The mob had breached the Prime Minister's residence and Sheikh Hasina had fled the country. Students were chanting that Freedom had been achieved and liberals across the world applauded. The Western Media created headlines declaring that The Gen Z Revolution has freed Bangladesh. But today standing in January 2026 when we look back that dream of Freedom has turned into a Nightmare. On that day there was Hope on the streets but today there is Fear. On one side was the 15 year rule of Sheikh Hasina where mouths were shut but stomachs were full. On the other side is the one and a half year rule of Dr Muhammad Yunus where mouths are open but stomachs are empty factories are closed and minorities are being systematically hunted down. Today we will seek the answer to the question that is in the mind of every sensible Bangladeshi but they are too afraid to ask Was Hasina’s Dictatorship better than Yunus’s Anarchy? Let us check the Balance Sheet of Bangladesh because this is the story of The Great Bangladesh Paradox.

First let us talk about the Pre Revolution era which we call the Hasina Era. Sheikh Hasina was no saint and under her rule there was corruption opponents were jailed and elections became a joke. But there was one thing that even her biggest enemies cannot deny and that was Delivery and Growth. Hasina knew that politics does not run on emotions it runs on concrete. She built the Padma Bridge with her own funds rejecting the World Bank when they refused to give a loan. This bridge was not just for transport it was a symbol of Bangladesh’s Self Respect. She ran the Metro Rail in Dhaka and built the Karnaphuli Tunnel. These projects were the veins of the economy and they gave Bangladesh a new identity in the world as an Emerging Asian Tiger.

Under Hasina Bangladesh became the world’s Second Largest Garment Exporter after China. The reason was that Hasina provided stability with an Iron Fist. Strikes were not allowed and blocking roads was forbidden. Global buyers like H&M Zara GAP and Walmart had confidence that if an order was placed in Dhaka the shipment would arrive on time. The economy was running at a speed of 6 to 7 percent and village girls were becoming independent by working in factories. Hasina solved the Power Crisis in collaboration with India. The Adani Power Godda Plant was supplying electricity directly to Bangladesh and the Rooppur Nuclear Plant was being built with Russia. Most importantly she kept control over radicals. Hasina had crushed Jamaat e Islami and drove India’s North East insurgents out of Bangladesh. The result was that the borders were safe and secularism was alive. Hindus were afraid but they were not dying and Durga Puja took place because the police baton was heavier than the radicals.

But everything was not good because Crony Capitalism was at its peak. Oligarchs like the S Alam Group who were close to Hasina ate into the banks like termites. Investigative reports show that the S Alam Group alone siphoned off 10 Billion Dollars from the banking system. This growth was fueled by debt but the system was running. Then came the Turning Point when students took to the streets. Their demand was valid because they were tired of corruption. But as soon as Hasina sat in the helicopter and fled to India a Vacuum was created that Dr Yunus could not fill. That Vacuum was filled by the Mob. Hasina’s departure did not just mean the departure of a PM it meant the Collapse of the State Machinery. The police fled the Courts closed and decisions started happening on the streets.

Now let us come to today’s Bangladesh which we call the Post Revolution Era. Dr Muhammad Yunus who is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and the darling of the world is now the Chief Advisor of the country. His vision was a New Bangladesh but the reality is something else entirely. The Yunus government and his supporters made the biggest mistake by fueling Anti India Rhetoric. It is easy to say India Out in politics but who will pay the bill for this in Economics? Bangladesh gets its requirement of onions eggs sugar and cotton from India. When you started Boycott India the supply chain broke. The result was that Food Inflation which was 9 percent during Hasina’s time has now crossed 15 percent. The common man who was cursing Hasina is today buying bread and vegetables at double the price and the taste of Freedom has turned bitter.

In the Yunus government chaos happens daily in factories in the name of Labour Rights sometimes to increase wages and sometimes for politics. The factories that used to run 24 hours during Hasina’s time are now closed 3 days a week sometimes due to lack of gas and sometimes due to mob violence. The benefit of this went directly to India. In the last 6 months global brands have shifted 15 to 20 percent of their orders from Bangladesh to Tiruppur India and Vietnam. Bangladesh killed its biggest industry and its Golden Goose with its own hands. The state of the banking sector is even worse. The new Governor Ahsan Mansur has himself admitted that banks have become Zombies. People are not allowed to withdraw their own money and withdrawal limits have been imposed. Forex Reserves which were once 48 Billion Dollars have fallen to 18 Billion Dollars. If the IMF had not given a bailout Bangladesh would have defaulted like Sri Lanka today because the country is on a Ventilator.

The most terrifying change is the Rise of Radicals or Talibanization. Jamaat e Islami which was underground during Hasina’s time is now in the power center. Since August 2024 more than 2500 attacks have been documented on Hindus. ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das was thrown in jail for demonstrating peacefully and labeled a Traitor. When statues of 1971 heroes were broken Dr Yunus was silent. When Durga Puja pandals were burnt Dr Yunus said this is political not communal. A Nobel Laureate is today justifying Ethnic Cleansing by calling it Politics.

If we do a direct head to head comparison the picture becomes clear. Hasina’s era was Dictatorship but Yunus’s era is Anarchy. During Hasina’s time GDP Growth was 6 to 7 percent which has now fallen to 4 percent. Inflation which was previously high but managed has now become Hyper Inflation. Law and Order which was previously in the hands of the police has now become Mob Rule. Power Supply where it was previously stable now faces 10 hour cuts. Relations with India which were previously like Best Friends have now become like Enemies. Minorities who were previously relatively protected are now victims of open attacks. Hasina might be a thief but she was a Competent Manager. Yunus might be honest but he is an Incompetent Administrator. And history is witness that a country does not run on honesty it runs on Competence and the Baton.

So finally what is the outcome of this Revolution? The students of Bangladesh thought that after Hasina left they would become Singapore but Radicalization Anti India Hate and Mob Rule have turned them back into East Pakistan. Today Bangladesh stands at a crossroads. On one side is Economic Ruin where factories are closing and on the other side is Radical Islam where minorities are not safe. Dr Yunus who was called Banker to the Poor is now on the path to becoming Bankrupter of the Nation. The mask is of Democracy but the face is of Destruction. Hasina’s Dictatorship was bad but Yunus’s Anarchy is even worse. Bangladesh stands on the brink of becoming a Failed State and the sad part is that the world kept clapping and an entire country burned down. The Dhaka Delusion is over The Reality is here And it is terrifying.
